So here, we’re going to give you the lowdown on three of Britain’s finest thrill-seeking establishments, conveniently located up and down the country. Thorpe Park in the south of England, Alton Towers in the Midlands, and the Pleasure Beach up north are all some of the UK’s most thrilling destinations. Each one has its own unique character, vibrant theming, and flagship rides that attract millions of visitors every year. All of these parks are extremely well established and have a variety of attractions that cater to a plethora of tastes – but if you’re purely looking for thrills, don’t worry; you won’t be disappointed.

So without any further ado, let’s jump right in. 

Blackpool Pleasure Beach – An Underrated Gem

Maybe this is just personal bias creeping in, because the Pleasure Beach was always the theme park I went to growing up, but I think it really is the most underrated theme park in the UK. It’s got more than enough packed into it to go toe-to-toe with the big boys, and all in a smaller park that’s so much more walkable than a park like Alton Towers. 

The iconic Big One towers over the park and, indeed, Blackpool’s coastline as a whole. The rides surround the entire Pleasure Beach park like an enormous, chaotic iron fence, full of spiralling peaks and troughs. Inside the park, you’ll have access to other favourites, like Infusion and Valhalla, not to mention the newly named Launch Pad, which thrusts thrill-seekers to a height of 210 feet in mere seconds, reaching a speed of 80mph. 

Icon is another must-ride for adrenaline junkies. It’s one of the Pleasure Beach’s newest additions, full of exhilarating high-speed accelerations, electrifying twists and turns, and steep drops. If you want to embrace the heritage of the park, then I’d also recommend a couple of legacy attractions, like the Big Dipper and the Grand National. Both rides have stood the test of time, and I would argue that their slightly rickety tracks are features, not flaws, that add to the thrill and general sense of pure terror. 

Overall, the Pleasure Beach is a thrilling day out for its rides alone, but when you factor in the walkable park size and shorter waiting times, I’d argue that it’s truly up there with the best.

Alton Towers – The Real Big One

I have a love/hate relationship with Alton Towers. Though I’ve visited around a dozen times over the years and seen it through various different eras and iterations, the highlights and drawbacks remain the same. 

Let’s start with the positives. Pound for pound, Alton Towers probably has the best rides in the UK. The Smiler, Galactica, Nemesis Sub Terra, and even Oblivion, are all propulsive, blood-pumping, arenaline-inducing affairs that will electrocute your senses and leave you a stumbling, bumbling mess when each ride comes to a sudden stop. I love them all, and you will too. 

The only issue with Alton Towers, and unfortunately it’s a big one, is the lines. Sure, you can expect to queue up for any ride worth its salt, but here? It’s crosses my line. I can’t exactly recount many fond childhood memories of standing in the rain for 3 hours, waiting for a 50-second ride. A great 50-second ride at that, but still, you get the point. 

I like Alton Towers, and it deserves its reputation for being the king of the UK’s Merlin-owned theme park scene. But I would rather have a day packed full of 20-odd rides at the Pleasure Beach, than 5 rides at Alton Towers. Sure, there are ways around it. You can spend extra on a queue jump pass, or arrive at opening time to capitalise on shorter lines – but I’ve tried that, and it’s still a small window. If you need to go on a weekend and don’t want to spend extra on a pass, I would advise that you capitalise on the shorter queue times for rides like Rita, which still provide some excellent thrills. 

Thorpe Park – The Inbetweener

For thrill seekers heading to the UK, Thorpe Park has a lot to offer in terms of adventure, fun, and excitement. Similar to the Pleasure Beach, Thorpe Park has a smaller square footage, but still manages to cram in a wide array of roller coasters, such as Stealth, which is one of the fastest launchers in Europe. The park is also home to Hyperia, the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the UK, so if you’re looking for something that’ll get your heart pounding, this is another must-ride. 

For those men and women of culture who need more than just a single steep drop to be satisfied, the sharp turns and sudden stops and drops of SAW – The Ride, based on the eponymous horror movie series, will definitely be more up your street. Overall, Thorpe Park has the extreme thrills of Alton Towers, packed into a smaller setting like the Pleasure Beach, albeit with fewer rides. 

It is worth noting that these parks have had the occasional accidents over the years, in which multiple injury claims have been filed. As a result, they have implemented tighter health and safety regulations and regular engineering checks that aim to minimise the possibility of faults.
