What comes to mind when you think of UK holiday destinations? A city break in Manchester? Walks in the countryside? Or maybe a family trip to Blackpool? Typically, people don’t tend to associate the UK with thrills, perhaps because we’re more well known for scones, crumpets and our national obsession with tea.

But in actual fact, if you’re chasing a thrill and you’re booking your next holiday, the UK is actually full of options for you that will give you the adrenaline rush you’re craving. Our small island is filled with mountain ranges, coastlines, rivers, and industrial urban spaces that are ideal destinations for sports enthusiasts. In England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, you’ll find all sorts of natural terrain and specialist facilities that support a whole host of different outdoor activities, like climbing, mountain biking, and surfing.

Just a word of warning: a lot of the UK’s environments might be too challenging for beginners, as many of them are outdoors and exposed to our often rainy weather. So if you’re new to extreme sports, it might be wise to get a few more years under your belt before visiting. Anyway, for those of you who are more experienced and have stuck around, let’s jump in.

Read: Top 19 Adventure Sports in Himachal Pradesh to Attempt for Journey Junkies

Snowdonia

Snowdonia, otherwise known as Eryri National Park, is, without a doubt, one of the UK’s most challenging outdoor regions. The terrain is extensive – spanning over 800 square miles of steep ridges, deep glacial valleys, and pointed peaks that are perfect for mountaineers, trail runners, and mountain bikers who are on the lookout for a demanding trail with dramatic views.

The eponymous Mount Snowden is one of the highest peaks in the entire UK, measuring in at 3560 feet. There are multiple ascents that all offer something a bit different, but no matter which way you choose to go up, you’ll be met with stunning views that stretch from the mountain range itself to the coastline.

For any mountain bikers out there, the Crib Goch region might be for you. Dozens of different mountain biking trails descend through forests and harsh terrain filled with jagged rocks, where you’ll be able to test the limits of your speed and control. This neck of the woods is also popular with climbers and hikers who ascend through these varied landscapes to find dramatic views over the many lakes and peaks in the area.

The Lake District

The Lake District National Park is one of the UK’s most popular destinations and attracts millions of visitors from all corners of the globe each and every year. It has enough on offer to challenge visitors with experience at all levels, with lake walks in Buttermere and Ullswater particularly popular for families. But let’s face it, if you’re reading this article, both of those options are a little tame.

If you’re looking to fill your boots with Wainwrights, then there are plenty that are more on the challenging side. Scafell Pike is the natural choice for many, since it’s the highest mountain in the Lake District as a whole, but personally, I’d recommend its slightly shorter brother – simply named Scafell. This mountain is a tougher climb that’s less crowded and offers essentially the same views as it’s right next door.

It would be silly to talk about the Lake District without talking about the lakes themselves. The place is naturally a kayaker’s dream, with dozens of enormous bodies of water begging to be explored. Personally, my favourite lake for kayaking is Derwentwater, as it’s full of small islands and hidden caves.

London

The UK’s most thrilling destinations aren’t just limited to the millions of acres of countryside. No, our country’s urban playgrounds also have plenty to offer. And there’s no greater urban playground than the nation’s capital: London.

In recent years, climbing has quickly become one of the city’s most popular sports; indoor centres, like bouldering gyms and lead climbing facilities, which were once operating on the periphery of the sports scene, are well-known hangout spots for adrenaline junkies who love steep overhangs and dynamic routes that aim to replicate rocky environments outdoors.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the River Thames, which is a must-visit destination for anyone who’s passionate about water sports. There are dozens of rowing clubs that welcome tourists and are open from early in the morning to late at night. The historic river stretches all the way through the capital, and is good fun if you like competitive or recreational rowing.

But it isn’t just rowing; paddleboarders and kayakers aren’t left behind; in fact, there are plenty of similar clubs that can be found in designated sections of the river.

For any keen cyclists out there, London has a couple of different velodromes: Lee Valley VeloPark and Herne Hill Velodrome, and don’t worry – these aren’t only open to locals and Team GB athletes! No, you won’t need to apply for a spouse visa in the UK to cycle here, but be warned, these tracks are steep and might prove dangerous for the initiated! Well, that’s it – a comprehensive guide to some of the UK’s most thrilling destinations.
